North.cloud bags $60M in funding to help businesses keep runaway cloud costs in check

A startup called North Cloud Holdings Inc. says it’s going to help companies prevent the costs of cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure spiraling out of control after raising $60 million in funding today.

The Series B round was led by PeakSpan Capital and saw participation from a host of others, including Litquidity Ventures, Companyon Ventures, Alpaca, Gaingels, Uncommon Denominator and Mana Ventures. With the funding, North.cloud plans to invest in the development of its autonomous financial operations platform, expand its third-party integrations and scale its marketing efforts.

AI has really taken off, and the vast majority of autonomous systems now run on public cloud infrastructure platforms like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. Those platforms provide reliable scale, but they come at a steep cost, not just in terms of dollars spent but also unpredictability, for many organizations really have no idea what kind of cloud bill they’re going to run up one month to another.

AI rapidly escalates cloud costs because of its complexity. When a new AI feature is deployed in the cloud, it might ping multiple backend systems simultaneously, and do this repeatedly, causing costs to increase in a way that’s extremely difficult to predict.

Yet the ability to forecast these expenses is critical for many organizations, because if their infrastructure costs are running wild, they can quickly surpass their budgets and strangle whatever profit margins they were hoping to eke out. “In the AI era, there’s a direct line between how efficiently you invest in technology and how smart your product actually is,” said North.cloud co-founder and Chief Executive Matt Biringer.

Forecasting cloud spend accurately is exactly what North.cloud tries to do, and the startup has become very good at doing it. Its platform works by unifying spend intelligence and automating cost optimization so it can not only predict what a company’s cloud and data costs are likely to be, but also help to reduce them without causing any disruption to their business. Rather than forcing finance teams to piece together fragmented spending data from diverse cloud consoles, North.cloud tries to identify infrastructure waste and increase the amount of compute power companies receive for every dollar they spend on cloud infrastructure.

One of the startup’s most useful capabilities is TokenFlow, which unifies data on AI model usage, attribution, budgets and compute costs under the same roof as traditional cloud spending.

By unifying all of this disparate data, North.cloud enables fully automated financial operations or FinOps, giving companies an accurate forecast of their current level of spending, and insights into how any updates or newly deployed systems will impact this.

“The rest of the market still treats optimization as an engineering problem,” Biringer said. “We think that’s the wrong bet: it’s a business problem and it deserves a real fintech platform built on automation and AI. North is the first product built to eliminate manual optimization entirely, democratizing FinOps so any company can move faster and run leaner.”

The startup furthered this vision with the recent launch of North v3, expanding its reach to encompass Microsoft Azure. The release means it now supports all three major public cloud infrastructure platforms, and also provided native integrations with Snowflake Inc.’s cloud data warehouse and AI models from OpenAI Group PBC and Anthropic PBC.

This enhanced support has enabled North.cloud to help early adopters such as AssemblyAI, Atlan, Tines, SnapLogic Inc. and Emplifi save a combined $400 million on their cloud and AI infrastructure costs. To date, it now manages just under $2 billion in managed cloud spending on behalf of its clients.

PeakSpan Capital’s Yaseen Abdulridha said North.cloud’s autonomous platform does the same kind of work as a fully staffed FinOps team, and is just as reliable. “That surface area was once limited to cloud spend and it has now expanded dramatically to cover the AI and data platforms every modern business runs on,” he added. “We are energized by how quickly it has moved to meet that moment and by what it means for customers who will never have to build that team themselves.”
