Amazon isn’t just electrifying its American delivery operations. The virtual big box stores that Bezos built understands the benefits of EVs as well as anyone, and they’re working hard to deploy electric vehicles everywhere they can. And now, that global push is extending to India.

Indian automaker TATA Motors has announced a deal with Amazon to deploy 3,000 electric trucks across Amazon’s transportation network in India. When it goes live, it will be the largest electric truck deployment by in India and mark Amazon’s most significant move to extend its Indian fleet electrification beyond last-mile logistics.

“India is accelerating towards electric mobility and the realization of Viksit Bharat 2047,” says Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, Hon’ble Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, Government of India. “The collaboration between TATA Motors and Amazon shows what that looks like in practice: sustained demand from a nationwide logistics network met by electric trucks manufactured in India. Through PM E-DRIVE, the Government will continue to support this transition, and I look forward to more such efforts in powering green logistics.”

In addition to being a big deal for TATA, the 3,000 electric truck deal represents a serous bump to India’s deployed electric truck fleet, and are a major step towards the wide-scale electrification of freight transportation across the country – that’s not just good for Amazon’s fuel bills, it’s good for everyone and everything that breathes air, too.

“Electrifying our logistics and transportation network is an important part of Amazon’s goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040,” says Abhinav Singh, Vice President, Operations, Amazon, APAC, Middle East, Africa and Turkey. “We have made significant progress in India, with more than 15,000 electric vehicles operating across 500-plus cities. To enable this transition, we are also supporting the development of infrastructure and solutions that make EV adoption easier for our carrier partners and drivers. We are now setting a bold vision to scale electric trucking, addressing one of the toughest challenges in decarbonizing transportation. Our collaboration with TATA Motors marks an important step towards realizing this vision. By combining our strengths, we aim to accelerate the deployment of electric trucks across more routes, starting with intracity operations and expanding to India’s major freight corridors.”

The truck, itself

The truck Amazon will be deploying in these record numbers is a version of the Tata Ultra E.7, a 7.5-tonne (~16,000 lb.) straight truck powered by a 240 kW (~320 hp) electric motor drawing power from a 96 kWh LFP battery pack. The truck’s makers claim a loaded range of up to 130 km (~80 miles) on a single charge, with DC fast-charging that’s capable enough to keep the trucks charged up between deliveries.

Amazon’s new TATA electric delivery trucks will support the transport of goods between warehouse facilities – which means traveling across cities and along India’s national freight corridors.
